Hi, I’m John. I’m a high school student with a deep-rooted passion for dance, a passion that has been a central part of my life for years. My journey extends beyond just personal growth—I’ve dedicated significant time as a volunteer at Friends of Children with Special Needs, an incredible organization that uplifts individuals with autism and other neurological conditions by fostering love, hope, respect, and community.
Through my experiences teaching piano to autistic individuals, supporting drama camps, and reporting talent show auditions, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of creative expression firsthand. Now, I’m eager to harness the incredible potential of dance to offer a new form of therapy to those with special needs.
My buddies help me out too. MORE
For children with autism, who might find verbal communication challenging, hip hop provides a powerful alternative. The energetic rhythms and bold movements become a language of their own, helping these kids express themselves in ways words cannot capture. Hip hop’s improvisational and creative elements ignite confidence, inviting children to explore their unique selves in a space where every expression is celebrated. This kind of self-discovery fosters emotional regulation, body awareness, and a profound sense of belonging.
Dancing can be a valuable resource for children with autism, especially those who are nonverbal. Dance can help children with autism communicate through their bodies, which can be a way to tell stories that they may not be able to express otherwise. However, some aspects of dance can be challenging for people with autism. For example, some people with autism may struggle with learning choreography and focusing. Autism movement therapy (AMT) is a treatment method for autism that uses music and dancing. A virtual dance program for autistic children may improve their motor skills and social skills.
Dance has the power to transform. It can uplift, connect, and heal. I’m driven by the vision of creating a world where every child with special needs can experience the joy, growth, and sense of community that dance offers. Together, we can make this vision a reality, one beat at a time.
